Blog: Why Career Exploration Starts Earlier Than You Think
Ask a group of high school students what they want to do after graduation, and you’ll likely hear a variety of answers—some confident, some uncertain, and many still exploring their options.
That’s perfectly normal.
Career exploration isn’t about expecting students to have their future planned by age 16. It’s about helping them discover their interests, understand their strengths, and connect classroom learning with real-world careers. In fact, the Iowa Department of Education has made career-based learning a statewide priority, encouraging students to begin exploring careers long before they graduate from high school.
At Iowa Lakes Community College, we believe career exploration isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about creating opportunities for students to ask questions, gain experiences, and discover what’s possible.
Career Exploration Is About Discovery
One of the biggest misconceptions students and parents have is that they need to choose a career before choosing a college.
The reality is that career exploration is a journey.
Students discover what they enjoy—and sometimes what they don’t—through classroom experiences, extracurricular activities, job shadows, internships, concurrent enrollment courses, Career Academy programs, volunteer work, and conversations with teachers, counselors, employers, and family members.
Every experience helps students better understand themselves and make more informed decisions about their future.
Why Starting Early Matters
The earlier students begin exploring careers, the more prepared they are to make confident decisions after high school.
Early career exploration helps students:
- Connect classroom learning to future careers.
- Discover careers they may not have previously considered.
- Identify their strengths and interests.
- Make more informed decisions about college and training.
- Build confidence before graduating from high school.
Rather than guessing what they want to do, students gain firsthand experiences that help shape their educational and career goals.
Iowa Is Investing in Career Exploration
Career exploration isn’t just important to Iowa Lakes—it’s a priority across the state.
Iowa continues to invest in career-based learning, encouraging partnerships between schools, colleges, and employers to provide students with meaningful experiences before graduation. Through job shadows, career fairs, work-based learning, internships, and concurrent enrollment opportunities, students gain a better understanding of the careers that are available throughout Iowa.
These experiences help students make informed choices while strengthening Iowa’s future workforce.
Did You Know?
Nearly 58,000 Iowa high school students participated in concurrent enrollment opportunities during the 2024-25 academic year, giving them the opportunity to earn college credit while exploring future educational and career pathways.
Learning by Doing
Career exploration is most meaningful when students can experience careers firsthand.
That’s why Iowa Lakes emphasizes hands-on learning from the very beginning.
Whether students are exploring healthcare, agriculture, aviation, business, education, information technology, manufacturing, transportation, or the skilled trades, learning extends beyond the classroom through labs, simulations, employer partnerships, clinical experiences, internships, and work-based learning.
These experiences allow students to build confidence while discovering which careers align with their interests and goals.
The Iowa Lakes Difference
At Iowa Lakes Community College, career exploration doesn’t begin after high school graduation—it begins while students are still discovering who they want to become.
Through partnerships with school districts in our five-county area, Career Academy programs, concurrent enrollment opportunities, campus visits, employer engagement, and hands-on learning experiences, Iowa Lakes helps students connect education with careers long before they enroll as full-time college students.
Once students arrive on campus, they can choose from more than 60 career and transfer programs and options, each designed to prepare them for success in today’s workforce or for seamless transfer to a four-year institution.
Our faculty bring real-world industry experience into the classroom, and our strong partnerships with employers throughout northwest Iowa provide students with opportunities to apply what they’re learning in authentic settings.
Career exploration isn’t a one-time event at Iowa Lakes—it’s part of the student experience from day one.

Parents Play an Important Role
Parents are often a student’s first career coach.
One of the most valuable things families can do is encourage curiosity rather than expecting certainty.
Ask questions such as:
- What classes do you enjoy most?
- What problems do you enjoy solving?
- What careers have you learned about recently?
- Is there someone you’d like to job shadow?
- Which Iowa Lakes programs would you like to explore?
Those conversations help students discover possibilities they may never have considered on their own.
Investing in a Student’s Future
Career exploration isn’t about asking students to decide what they’ll do for the rest of their lives.
It’s about helping them discover opportunities, build confidence, and make informed decisions about what comes next.
