Work-Based Learning

Real-World Experience Starts Here

The Iowa Lakes Work-Based Learning program is designed to connect classroom instruction with meaningful, hands-on work experiences that prepare students for their future careers. By bridging education and employment, the program allows students to apply what they learn in the classroom to real-world situations while gaining valuable insights into the expectations of today’s workforce.

  • Apprenticeships – gain hands-on training while earning and learning

  • Internships – apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings

  • Pre-apprenticeships – explore career pathways and prepare for future training

  • Classroom speakers – learn directly from industry professionals

  • Mock interviews – practice interview skills and build confidence

  • Job shadows – observe careers firsthand and explore workplace environments

The Work-Based Learning program collaborates closely with educators and business partners to design career preparation and exploration opportunities that are both practical and impactful. Students benefit by strengthening communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills while also gaining direct exposure to industry practices. Employers, in turn, are able to engage with potential future employees, provide mentorship, and help guide the next generation of skilled professionals.

Through these partnerships, Iowa Lakes Community College ensures that students are not only academically prepared but also equipped with the experiences and networks needed to thrive in a competitive job market. By participating, students increase their employability, gain confidence in their career choices, and leave high school with a stronger sense of direction.

Currently, the Iowa Lakes Work-Based Learning program proudly serves students in the Algona, Emmetsburg, and Estherville Lincoln Central school districts.
