Applications submitted within two weeks of the start of classes will be processed for the following semester.
Examples:
- If your application for the Fall semester is submitted within two weeks of the Fall term's start date, it will be processed for the Spring semester.
- If your application for the Spring semester is submitted within three weeks of the start date, it will be processed for the next Fall semester.
Yes, international students can work up to 20 hours per week in a student services job on campus during classes. You may work full-time in an on-campus student services role during school breaks.
Please note that international students are not authorized to work off-campus.

F-1 international students are not eligible for federal financial aid.
However, international students are encouraged to apply for scholarships using our online scholarship application.

Yes, you may take online classes during the summer since it is not a mandatory term. However, during the Fall and Spring semesters, you can take only one online class as part of your course load.
As an F-1 international student, you must maintain full-time enrollment, which requires a minimum of 12 credits per semester. Of these 12 credits, no more than 3 credits (or one class) can be taken online.
No, Iowa Lakes does not accept students with out-of-status SEVIS records.
Yes, as an international student, you can obtain an Iowa Driver’s License (DL) or ID by meeting the following requirements:

Proof of Identity and Residency
- Provide acceptable documentation to the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT).
- Your immigration document must show a status period of at least 30 days remaining.

Driving Record
- Ensure your driving privileges are not canceled, suspended, or revoked in any state.

Social Security Number (SSN)
- If you are authorized for employment, you must present proof of your SSN.
- If you are not authorized for employment, you must not document an SSN, but the Iowa DOT will verify your USCIS number.
- If you are eligible for employment but do not have an SSN, you must obtain one and present it.

Verification with SSA
- The Iowa DOT will electronically verify your name, date of birth, and SSN with the Social Security Administration (SSA).
- Ensure your information is accurate and up-to-date with the SSA to avoid delays. Update your information several days before applying if necessary. Visit www.ssa.gov for assistance.

Unique DL/ID Number
- Your SSN will not appear on your DL or ID. Instead, the Iowa DOT will assign a unique DL or ID number.

Tests and Fees
- Pass a vision test.
- Successfully complete all required written and practical driving tests.
- Pay the applicable fees.

Yes, you can obtain a Social Security Number (SSN) by providing the Social Security Administration (SSA) with the following:
- Your current passport.
- Your current SEVIS I-20 form.
- A letter from your Designated School Official (DSO) that includes:
- Your identification details.
- Confirmation of your current school status.
- The type of work you’ll be doing.
- Your employer's information.
- Your employment start date.
- The number of hours you’ll be working.

All F-1 students must maintain health insurance coverage that includes repatriation of remains. Iowa Lakes Community College provides this insurance on your behalf and adds the cost to your college bill.
English Proficiency Testing Waiver
As an F-1 student, you are permitted to stay in the U.S. for the "duration of status," meaning as long as you maintain good standing in SEVIS. Your SEVIS status will expire 60 days after the program end date listed on your I-20.
If you qualify for and are approved for Optional Practical Training (OPT), your program end date and authorized stay will be extended to 60 days beyond the completion of your OPT period.
Most local businesses accept credit cards, but it's important to inform your bank that you will be living in Iowa to prevent fraud alerts that could lead to your account being frozen.
You also have the option to pay in cash using U.S. Dollars.
Iowa Lakes offers a convenient payment plan that allows students to pay their tuition in installments. To enroll, visit your campus cashier or sign up online through the Self-Service Student Portal.
When traveling within the U.S., be sure to carry the following documents:
- Your valid passport
- Your I-20 form
- Your student visa
- A printed copy of your I-94 record
- Valid passport with valid F or M visa (if applicable)
- Signed Form I-20, “Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Status”

You must defer your enrollment to the next available term, either Fall or Spring.
If your visa expires, you must obtain a new one before returning to the U.S. after leaving. However, you do not need to renew your visa while remaining in the U.S., as your stay is valid for the duration of your status.

However, if you secure an on-campus job, you will need a U.S. bank account for direct deposit payments, as Iowa Lakes does not issue paper checks to new employees. Please note that some banks may require a Social Security Number to open an account.
Yes, you must notify a Designated School Official (DSO) of your new address within 10 days. The DSO will then update your SEVIS record accordingly.
