PRESS RELEASE: IOWA LAKES TO HOST PARKINSON’S DISEASE SESSION FOCUSED ON MENTAL HEALTH

Emmetsburg, Iowa — Iowa Lakes Community College will host an informational session, Parkinson’s Disease: A Mental Health Approach, on Thursday, May 7, from 4 to 6 p.m. on the Emmetsburg Campus.

The session is designed to provide a deeper understanding of Parkinson’s disease beyond physical symptoms, with a focus on the emotional and cognitive challenges individuals may experience. Participants will gain practical knowledge to better support those living with the disease through a compassionate and informed approach.

Dr. Martha Olson will serve as the presenter, guiding attendees through key topics including disease progression, movement and non-movement challenges, pain management strategies, mental health considerations, treatment options such as Deep Brain Stimulation, and the role of interdisciplinary care.

“At Iowa Lakes, we are committed to providing education that reflects the full scope of care individuals need,” said Chantel Teeter, director of allied health and workforce education. “This session goes beyond clinical understanding to address the mental and emotional impact of Parkinson’s disease, helping participants better support those they serve with knowledge, compassion and confidence.”

The course is intended for healthcare professionals seeking continuing education hours, as well as caregivers, family members, individuals diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, and anyone interested in learning more about neurological and mental health care.
