Iowa Lakes Powersports Students Gain Real-World Experience Through Internships

Powersports & Power Equipment Internships

At Iowa Lakes Community College, our Powersports & Power Equipment Technology students don’t just learn in the classroom, they take their skills into the real world through valuable internships.

Recently, several students had the opportunity to work with local employers who are longtime partners of the program, providing hands-on experience and mentorship that builds confidence and career readiness.

Sportsman’s Corner – Algona

Owner Adam Dearchs has been a strong supporter of Iowa Lakes students for years, regularly welcoming them into his business.

“It’s a good learning experience for them. They get real-world experience and hands-on application with things like diagnostics. Instructors provide students with a checklist and packet to guide their learning, and as a member of the advisory board, I help give input on what skills they should be working on.”

Sportsman’s Corner also employs former Iowa Lakes student Dakota Valentine, who is now a full-time part of the team.

Student Spotlight: Oakley Knochenmus

Oakley, a Shop Technician at Sportsman’s Corner, has been learning the ropes repairing and servicing Can-Am and Honda UTVs.

“I’m really enjoying the chance to work on different types of vehicles,” Oakley said. “Right now, I’m in the learning phase, but I know the skills I’m picking up will help me in my career. At Iowa Lakes, I learned how to use a multi-meter, read torque wrenches, and follow manuals. Those skills are things I use every day here.”

Currently, Oakley is servicing a Can-Am Defender Limited Max—a hands-on experience that directly connects his Iowa Lakes classroom learning to the field.

Lake Mills Motorsports – Algona

Another strong partner in the program is Lake Mills Motorsports, where the owner praised the quality of Iowa Lakes students.

“They’ve worked very well here. It’s been helpful to have students—it fills gaps in our workload and makes our company stronger. I usually let them explore what they want to learn, then add in things I know they should know. The program has turned out some real expertise guys, and that’s been awesome to see.”

Student Spotlight: Brice Rooney

At Lake Mills Motorsports, Brice Rooney works as a technician handling mechanic duties and setup services.

“I’ve learned a lot about diagnostics and electrical work here,” Brice explained. “At Iowa Lakes, the focus on electrical and diagnostics has been especially valuable. I’m using that knowledge every day.”

Building Skills, Building Careers

These internships showcase the powerful impact of Iowa Lakes’ hands-on learning model. Local businesses benefit from energetic, skilled students who bring fresh knowledge to the shop, while students gain mentorship, confidence, and industry experience that positions them for long-term success.

With partners like Sportsman’s Corner and Lake Mills Motorsports, Iowa Lakes continues to fuel the future of the Powersports industry—one student at a time.
