PRESS RELEASE: IOWA LAKES COMMUNITY COLLEGE HONORS STUDENTS WITH 2026 KIBBIE OUTSTANDING SERVICE AWARD
Estherville, Iowa — Iowa Lakes Community College recognized three students during its Commencement Ceremony on May 15, 2026, with the John P. “Jack” Kibbie Outstanding Service Award, an honor presented annually to students who exemplify outstanding service to the college and their communities.
The award is conferred “in the spirit of keeping the light of service to others burning brightly” to Iowa Lakes students. The award honors Senator Jack Kibbie, frequently referred to as “The Father of Iowa Community Colleges.” Senator Kibbie served on the Iowa Lakes Board of Trustees from 1970 to 1988 and was Board President for 9 of those 18 years.
Faculty and staff nominate students for the award, and the Iowa Lakes Board of Trustees selects recipients.
The 2026 recipients include:
Spencer Kober, associate in science, Rochester
Kober demonstrated a strong commitment to service and leadership throughout his time at Iowa Lakes. He regularly volunteered at community breakfasts, helping serve more than 150 individuals each month, and participated in a Rebuilding Together Minnesota project in Lakefield, assisting a family in need. Kober also played a leadership role in Laker Life, helping guide meetings that provided support and connection for students following the Iowa Lakes men’s baseball team bus accident. His positive attitude and dedication to serving others distinguished him as a leader among his peers and an ambassador for Iowa Lakes.
Jazmine Besaw, associate in arts, Estherville
Besaw has consistently stepped beyond her comfort zone to serve others through her involvement in Laker Life, choir, and community outreach efforts. She participated in two spring break mission trips supporting children in underserved communities and families experiencing homelessness. Once reserved as a freshman, Besaw grew into a confident mentor for fellow students, offering guidance and encouragement. She also served as an All-State Music Camp ambassador and shared her vocal talents with residents in assisted living and nursing facilities.
Grace Lutat, associate degree in nursing and associate in science, Estherville
Lutat made a lasting impact on the Iowa Lakes community through her leadership and service. She served the Estherville Campus Student Senate as vice president for two years and as president this year, helping expand student involvement through events such as RAGBRAI activities, tailgates, food drives, and local back-to-school celebrations. Lutat also volunteered with VFW Post 3388, assisting with grounds improvements and honoring veterans by placing flags at local cemeteries on Memorial Day. In addition, she was a three-year member of the Iowa Lakes Dance Team and served as captain for two years.
“The Kibbie Outstanding Service Award recognizes students who lead through compassion, service, and a commitment to making a positive impact on others,” said Dr. Dan Lutat, executive director of foundations and government affairs. “Spencer, Jazmine, and Grace each demonstrated an exceptional willingness to serve both the college and their communities, and they embody the spirit and legacy Senator Kibbie represented throughout his life.”
