Building Community, One Conversation at a Time

For many students, college is about more than classes, assignments, and schedules. It is about finding a place where they feel welcomed, supported, and connected.

That sense of belonging was at the heart of a recent community connection event on the Spencer Campus of Iowa Lakes Community College.

Through a partnership between the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program and Iowa Lakes Student Senate, students gathered with local RSVP volunteers for an evening focused on conversation, friendship, and community. RSVP Director Mari Duncan worked with Spencer Campus staff to create a welcoming space where students could meet community members and build connections beyond the classroom.

The goal was simple: bring people together.

Duncan and Assistant Professor Shante Whalen prepared conversation starter cards to help students and volunteers get to know one another, but they were hardly needed. Conversations started naturally, with students and volunteers quickly sharing stories, laughter, and experiences.

Many of the students who attended were international students and members of the Iowa Lakes soccer program. For students living far from home, opportunities like this can make a meaningful difference. The event gave them a chance to practice conversation, learn more about the Spencer community, and build relationships outside of classes and athletics.

Soccer coaches also attended and appreciated seeing community members take time to welcome and support Iowa Lakes students. Their involvement reflected the sense of encouragement and care that helps students feel at home.

What stood out most was how easily the connections formed. Different generations, backgrounds, and life experiences came together through genuine conversation and shared curiosity.

Because of the success of the event, organizers are already looking ahead. Beginning in Fall 2026, Iowa Lakes and RSVP hope to host monthly mixers that continue bringing students and community members together. Additional activities, such as brunch outings, shopping trips, and other social gatherings, are also being explored.

At Iowa Lakes, student success goes beyond academics. It includes helping students feel connected, supported, and engaged on campus and in the communities they call home.

Events like this show the difference a simple conversation can make.
