Iowa Lakes TRIO Talent Search: Guiding Students to High School Graduation & Beyond
The TRIO Talent Search program at Iowa Lakes Community College is dedicated to helping middle and high school students explore their futures, graduate with confidence, and take the next step into college or career training.
What is TRIO Talent Search?
TRIO Talent Search is a federally funded program designed for students in grades 6–12. Students may qualify if neither parent holds a four-year degree or if their family meets taxable income guidelines.
Because the program is supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, all services are offered completely free to students and their families.
Currently, Iowa Lakes TRIO Talent Search partners with 12 school districts across northwest Iowa, including: Algona Public, Bishop Garrigan, Emmetsburg Catholic, Emmetsburg Public, Estherville-Lincoln Central, North Union, Graettinger-Terril, Ruthven-Ayrshire, Okoboji, Spencer, Spirit Lake, and West Bend-Mallard. With the ability to serve up to 700 students, the program is already reaching more than 630 young people each year.
How Students Benefit
Talent Search coordinators visit schools each month to provide personalized guidance and resources. Students receive support in areas such as:
- College applications and campus visits
- Scholarship searches and financial literacy
- Letters of recommendation and career exploration
- Study skills, time management, and leadership development
Beyond one-on-one guidance, students are also invited to participate in events where meals, transportation, and activities are all provided at no cost. These experiences are designed to expand horizons, build confidence, and prepare students for life after high school.
Opportunities Beyond the Classroom
In addition to monthly school visits, TRIO Talent Search hosts educational and cultural events throughout the year. These experiences allow students to learn in new environments, meet new people, and gain valuable perspectives.
For example, the 2024–25 program year concluded with a three-day trip to the Black Hills in July. Twenty-three high school students explored Crazy Horse, Mount Rushmore, and Custer State Park, while also touring South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. The trip included team-building activities, a chuckwagon supper and show, and opportunities to learn about the history and culture of the region.
Experiences like these help students step outside their comfort zones, develop important life skills, and envision the possibilities for their future.
How to Apply
Students in grades 6–12 who attend one of the program’s partner schools—or are homeschooled—are welcome to apply. Applications are accepted year-round.
