Update from 2/13/26 Press Conference
Earlier today, Iowa Lakes Community College held a press conference to provide an update regarding the bus accident involving members of the Iowa Lakes baseball team.
Lieutenant Aaron Smidt of the Iowa State Patrol provided an investigative update and confirmed that Carter Johnson passed away as a result of injuries sustained in the accident. The investigation remains ongoing.
Iowa Lakes President Scott Stokes expressed the College’s deepest condolences to Carter Johnson’s family, friends, and teammates. He reaffirmed that the College’s priority remains the safety, well-being, and support of its students and noted the institution’s full cooperation with authorities.
Vice President of Student Services and Athletic Director Troy Larson shared remarks on behalf of the athletic department, acknowledging the profound impact of the loss on the baseball team and campus community. He expressed appreciation for the overwhelming outpouring of support from across the region and beyond.
The College continues to provide counseling services, academic flexibility, and individualized support to students impacted by this tragedy.
Iowa Lakes Community College asks for continued privacy and compassion for Carter Johnson’s family and for its students as they grieve.
