A COMMUNITY DEDICATED TO YOUR SUCCESS, FROM START TO TRANSFER
TRIO-SSS (Student Support Services) is a free program at Iowa Lakes, fully funded by the U.S. Department of Education. It helps eligible students succeed academically, complete their degrees, and smoothly transfer to a four-year college.

Funding amount: approximately $348,489 annually.

Locations: Room 9 on the Estherville Campus and Room 240 on the Emmetsburg Campus.
Our Mission
We promote both academic and personal growth by offering student-centered services that enhance retention, graduation, and successful transfers to four-year institutions.
To participate, a student must:

Be enrolled at Iowa Lakes Community College with the intent to transfer to a 4-year institution, and
-
Meet at least one of the following criteria:

- Neither parent nor student has graduated from a 4-year college or university and/or,
- The family meets our federal income guidelines, based on the family’s TAXABLE income level and/or,
- Neither parent nor student has graduated from a 4-year college or university and/or,
- The student has a documented disability.
Our program is a FREE program committed to helping students succeed and obtain their educational goals. Our services enhance academic skills, increase retention and graduation rates, and facilitate the transitional process to the next level of higher education.

TRIO-SSS Academy: TRIO-SSS students are automatically enrolled in the TRIO-SSS Academy on Canvas, where they can access all the TRIO-SSS resources
Academic Enhancement: We offer Professional, Peer, and Online Tutoring. Professional and Peer tutoring is offered in person and virtually. Online tutoring is offered 24/7 in over 250 subjects via tutor.com
Career Advising: We assist students with career exploration, resume writing, and interviewing skills. An essential part of the college experience is identifying interests and skills and matching these with possible career fields.
Cultural & Educational Enrichment Opportunities: Students will have an opportunity to participate in various cultural events and leadership opportunities. Activities take place both on the Iowa Lakes Community College campus as well as in other communities.
Financial Literacy: We assist students in understanding the financial aid process, providing budgeting tips, credit card debt management, information on various types of aid available, scholarship opportunities, and deadline requirements, as well as guidance on writing scholarship essays.
Peer Mentoring: Participants who are first-time, full-time students at Iowa Lakes Community College are assigned a peer mentor. Peer mentors are sophomore TRIO-SSS participants who are available in person and via email to assist students with study skills, time management, locating community and campus resources, and providing personal support.
Transfer Counseling: We assist students in exploring colleges and areas of study by providing college visits and assistance with transferring to a 4-year college. Communication and support are provided through office visits, weekly emails, monthly newsletters, and social media accounts.
Workshops: We offer workshops in person, virtually, and online. All participants have access to StudentLingo, an online platform featuring workshops on various topics, including Exploring Careers, Stress Management, Study Skills, Time Management, Test Anxiety, Financial Literacy, and more.

Professional, Peer, and Online Tutoring
- A professional tutor is available in person or virtually
- Peer tutoring is available in person or virtually
- Tutor.com is an online tutoring platform where students can connect with expert tutors in over 250 subject areas for on demand, 1:1 help 24/7.
Mentoring
The TRIO-SSS Mentoring Program is designed to connect returning TRIO-SSS students with first time TRIO-SSS Students. The mentoring curriculum covers various topics to help you transition to college, build relationships, and make the most of your college experience. Mentoring is offered in person and virtually. Topics that a mentor may cover include:
- Transition to college
- Study skills, time management and other success skills
- Balancing school, work, activities, friends and family
- Getting and staying connected
- Choosing a major
Mentors will hold weekly sessions covering various topics to help you succeed in college.
Stop in Room 9 in Estherville or Room 240 in Emmetsburg for an updated tutoring and mentoring schedule.
