(Estherville, Iowa) Dave Petrick, Photography Instructor at Iowa Lakes Community College, wins the 2022 Top Non-Master Certified Professional Photographer (CPP) award, along with second and third-place finishes in the animal category and a third-place finish in the illustrative section at the Professional Photographers of Iowa Winter Competition and Conference held in Des Moines in March.

“The top CPP award is the most important award as it reflects overall excellence in the print competition,” explained Petrick.

Petrick, an instructor at Iowa Lakes since 1999 and a professional photographer since 1975, attends photography conferences and participates in competitions to keep up with the current trends in the photography industry, allowing him to teach his students the most up-to-date and popular techniques.

“I enjoy sharing photography with students, and it is great to see students smile when they master an aspect of photography and start creating great images,” explained Petrick. “My favorite part of photography is being out photographing events as they happen, like the Winter Games, Relay for Life, and Oktoberfest for the Dickinson County News and Chamber. I also enjoy photographing the music events and sports action at Iowa Lakes.”

Petrick is a Professional Photographers of America Life member as a certified photographer, a Mentor Coordinator and past president of Northwest Iowa Professional Photographers, and a South Dakota Professional Photographers Association member.

“There are so many things around us that can be subjects for photographs. Iowa has a lot of really great places to photograph; the skies here can be magnificent. We don’t even have to go far to get great images. I try to capture these images for competitions. I have thousands of images around the Iowa Great Lakes,” said Petrick.
