Meet the Aviation Alumni: From Student Pilot to Professional Charter Pilot
After graduating from Iowa Lakes Community College in the summer of 2024, Brett Schouten, an Aviation & Airport Management alumnus, has already launched an exciting career in professional aviation.
Today, he flies charter operations throughout northwest Iowa, primarily piloting a Citation Excel business jet while also flying turboprop aircraft. It’s a career that allows him to put the skills and knowledge he gained at Iowa Lakes into practice every day.
When reflecting on his time in the program, he believes Iowa Lakes stands out for more than just its quality flight training.
“I think what sets Iowa Lakes apart is its affordability and flexibility,” he said. “There were times when things didn’t go right the first time, but after working with the instructors and administration, the problems were quickly resolved. The support you receive really makes a difference.”
He also values the close-knit atmosphere that defines the program.
“At Iowa Lakes, you know everyone by their first name, and they know you. You build relationships with your instructors and classmates that I believe will last a lifetime.”
Some of his favorite memories came with each milestone in his flight training.
“Every time I earned a new pilot certificate or rating was a great memory. Everyone was incredibly supportive of one another throughout training, and we celebrated each other’s successes.”
His involvement extended beyond the cockpit as well. He was an active member of the Aviation Club and later worked for the college as a flight instructor. In that role, he also served as a group leader, helping guide fellow instructors and students by answering questions, offering support, and helping them stay on track throughout their training.
Looking back, he has simple but meaningful advice for anyone considering Iowa Lakes.
“Iowa Lakes is a great place with great people. You never feel like you’re just a number. Everyone knows everyone, and it feels like a small community where people share the same passion for aviation.”
From earning certificates to flying charter aircraft professionally, his journey is a testament to the opportunities that begin at Iowa Lakes. With personalized instruction, supportive faculty, and a strong sense of community, the Aviation & Airport Management program continues to prepare students for successful careers in the aviation industry.
