Meet the Aviation Alumni: Andrew Tran
For Andrew Tran, choosing the Iowa Lakes Aviation & Airport Management program was the first step toward a successful career in the skies. After graduating in 2023 with an Associate of Applied Science in Aviation & Airport Management, Andrew is now a First Officer with Republic Airways based in Indianapolis—a milestone that reflects the quality of education and hands-on flight training he received at Iowa Lakes Community College.
When asked what makes the Iowa Lakes aviation program stand out, Andrew points to two key factors: affordability and exceptional instruction.
“One thing that sets Iowa Lakes apart from other schools is the cost and the quality of instruction,” Andrew said. “It’s not uncommon to hear of students graduating from four-year colleges or accelerated flight schools with more than $200,000 in debt.”
Through scholarships and the affordable tuition offered at Iowa Lakes, Andrew was able to complete his education without taking out student loans.
“That was extremely important for me and my family,” he shared.
Beyond the classroom and cockpit, Andrew found opportunities to become involved across campus. He served as president of the Iowa Lakes Aviation Club from 2022-2023 and was also a member of the Iowa Lakes Jazz Band from 2019-2022. These experiences helped him build lasting friendships while developing leadership skills alongside his aviation training.
Today, Andrew encourages prospective students who are considering a career in aviation to look closely at what Iowa Lakes has to offer.
