Lakes Area Career Academy Discussed at Iowa Lakes Board Meeting; Tuition and Fees set for 2020-2021

(Estherville, Iowa) The Iowa Lakes Board of Trustees approved tuition and fees for the 2020-2021 school year during their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday afternoon.

The Trustees approved to set in-state tuition at $188 per credit hour, Minnesota residents will pay $193 per credit hour. Non-residents and International students will pay $199 per credit hour.

Valerie Newhouse, President of Iowa Lakes Community College, provided the Board with an overview of happenings on the Spirit Lake Campus over the past year and provided an update on Secondary Programs – or Concurrent Enrollment offerings taking place within the Iowa Great Lakes Region.

Additionally, Iowa Lakes will offer an Engineering Technology Career Academy on the Estherville Campus this fall for students that attend Okoboji, Spirit Lake, Harris-Lake Park, Estherville-Lincoln Central, and GTRA school districts.

The Engineering Technology Career Academy allows students to complete the first year of the Engineering Technology program during their junior and senior years of high school with a seamless transition into the Engineering Technology program offered at Iowa Lakes.

“Students taking part in the Engineering Technology Career Academy will also complete a Registered Apprenticeship and have an opportunity to achieve that apprenticeship through Rosenboom Manufacturing in Spirit Lake,” said Newhouse.

Additionally, Iowa Lakes Community College held a public bid opening for the proposed Farm Lab on Monday, May 18, with nine sealed bids received.

Delaine Hiney, Executive Director of Facilities Management, was granted board approval to accept the low base bids submitted by Quail Construction located out of Spencer, Iowa. The accepted bids were for $899,499 to be completed within 180 days, and an alternate #1 bid for radiant floor heat was $44,700. The total of the bids accepted for the Farm Lab project totaled $944,199.

Iowa Lakes Community College continues to focus on training opportunities available within the Iowa Lakes District.

“The Electrical Apprenticeship classes held on the Spirit Lake Campus and Professional Dog Grooming on the Emmetsburg Campus have resumed, and continuing education programmers are developing additional course offerings,” said President Newhouse.
