Iowa Lakes Trustees Discuss Student Success Supported by Grant Funding
(Estherville, Iowa) The Iowa Lakes Board of Trustees met Tuesday afternoon at the SERT Facility on the Estherville Campus.
Robert Leifeld, Vice President of Administration, led the presentation and provided the board with an overview of the grant writing process at Iowa Lakes Community College and what grant funds do for the institution.
“Grant funding helps to support and grow various programming and student activities on campus and for the communities we serve,” said Leifeld.
During Fiscal Year 2020, Iowa Lakes Community College secured funding for 77 percent of grant-funded-project submissions and is already experiencing success when evaluating the total number of grants awarded for 2021. Iowa Lakes has currently seen more than 60 percent of grant submissions awarded, while some are still awaiting announcements of grant awards.
Substantial grant awards for FY 21 year are associated with the COVID CARES Funding Grants. These grants help offset unexpected expenses generated from the coronavirus pandemic for Iowa Lakes’ students and the college.
Collaborative Grants are another area of opportunity for Iowa Lakes and all Iowa community colleges.
Leifeld shared, “Collaborative Grants allow all community colleges in Iowa to work together as one entity to help secure funding, procure resources and share best practices to benefit all constituents served by the community college system.”
In other business, Leifeld received Board approval to move forward with a grant application to the Palo Alto County Gaming Development Corporation (PACGDC) to upgrade the Community Room located between the Emmetsburg Public Library and Smith Wellness Center.
Dan Lutat, Director of Governmental Affairs & Special Projects, and Tim Busch, Aviation & Airport Management Coordinator/Assistant Professor, presented a possible opportunity to work with the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) Leadership Advantage program. Iowa Lakes is exploring to provide programming in the areas of computer science or flight training.
Jolene Rogers, Executive Director of Community and Business Relations, received approval to accept a donation on behalf of the Dr. Gerald Wieneke Estate.
Rogers received approval to move forward to publish the notice for the New Jobs Training Bond Project and to accept the preliminary official statement and electronic bidding procedures for the bond sale held on November 17, 2020.
The Iowa Lakes Community College Board of Trustees will hold their next meeting on Tuesday, November 17, 2020, on the Estherville Campus at the SERT Facility. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 4:30 pm.
