Iowa Lakes handbell choir set to perform
The public is invited to attend a handbell performance at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 29, at First Presbyterian Church, 3501 Hill Avenue in Spirit Lake.
The Iowa Lakes Community College Handbell Choir, under the direction of Carol Ayres Stueven, performs on a six-octave range — from G2 to G8 — of Schulmerich handbells. The bells are made of bronze and range in weight from four ounces to 15 pounds. The choir also supplements handbells with a six-octave set of handchimes.
Students will demonstrate many different handbell techniques, from the singing bowl to gyro effect, during this program. A wide variety of music will be covered, from sacred to secular, including spirituals, pop and concert music.
“It’s really challenging music,” Ayres Stueven said. “There are so many different techniques.”
At this concert, the Iowa Lakes choir will debut its sixth octave of handchimes.
Free will donations are accepted toward the purchase and upkeep of the handbells and handchimes.
