(Estherville, Iowa) Iowa Lakes Community College will be hosting a retirement reception honoring Valerie Newhouse, the seventh President of Iowa Lakes, on June 9 at 2:30 pm in the Janice K. Lund Performing Arts Center located on the Estherville Campus.

Newhouse began her relationship with Iowa Lakes in 1986 when she started working in adult and continuing education. After holding various other roles, including Executive Vice President, Vice President of Administration, Emmetsburg Campus Associate Dean and Secondary Programs Coordinator and Supervisor, Newhouse became President in 2009, twenty-three years later.

Newhouse’s dedication to Iowa Lakes is evident through the extensive infrastructure projects and progressive programming offerings she pioneered over the past 13 years. She has received various awards and honors during her career, including the Governors Volunteer Award for work with literacy students, the Chief Administrator Award in 2017 from the Iowa Association of Community College Trustees, and the Distinguished Higher Education Leadership Award from the Iowa Women in Higher Education in 2017. Newhouse has also been active, serving as a member and chairperson in many local and statewide organizations.

Newhouse’s retirement will be effective on June 30, when Scott Stokes will become the next President of Iowa Lakes Community College.
