Four Iowa Lakes Students Awarded American Legion Scholarships
(Estherville, Iowa) Melvin Gossler and Ed Rohner, two representatives of the American Legion of Iowa Foundation, visited Iowa Lakes Community College on October 16, 2020, at the Estherville campus to recognize American Legion Scholarship recipients.
The American Legion Foundation presented Iowa Lakes a $2,000 check that supports four $500 scholarships for students that are attending Iowa Lakes Community College. These scholarships are awarded based on need, references, and a short essay describing the students’ accomplishments, service to their communities, and future goals.
The scholarship recipients for the American Legion of Iowa Foundation $500 scholarships are Brandon Gifford of Algona, Anyssa Sargent of Cylinder, Seattle Sweeney of Arnolds Park, and Devin McCrea of Estherville. Sweeney was the only student able to attend the visit in person.
At Iowa Lakes Community College, Brandon Gifford is studying Criminal Justice. Anyssa Sargent is studying nursing and plans to transfer and obtain a bachelor’s degree in Nursing. Seattle Sweeney, an Arts and Science major, intends to get a bachelor’s degree in Teaching and Education. Devin McCrea is majoring in Wind Energy and Turbine Technology.
“We are very proud of our partnership with the American Legion Foundation. They annually provide funds for four scholarships that are awarded to Iowa Lakes Community College students. The men and women of the American Legion have served their country in a military capacity and continue to serve by providing programs to assist students in a significant way. The students that were awarded each scholarship were appreciative and well deserving. Iowa Lakes would like to thank the American Legion Foundation for supporting our students,” explained Tim Ireland, the Career/Veteran/Military Services Coordinator at Iowa Lakes.
Partners like the American Legion Foundation make college education more accessible and affordable for current and prospective Iowa Lakes students.
