Cosmetology Program Opens at Iowa Lakes Featuring Newly Created Laker Salon

(Emmetsburg, Iowa) Future stylists hoping for a promising career can now attend Iowa Lakes Community College’s new Cosmetology program. With renovations completed on the Laker Salon Cosmetology Lab and the Iowa Department of Public Health’s Board of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences approving licensure, the Cosmetology program is now open and instructing the first group of students.
“Cosmetology, also described as appearance enhancement, is a vast industry that is forever changing. At Iowa Lakes, we will be offering the fundamentals and advanced techniques of cutting, coloring, and styling, as well as salon management. It is a privilege to inspire a new generation of cosmetologists,” shared Laurie Pearson, Iowa Lakes Cosmetology Instructor and Coordinator.
Cosmetology students at Iowa Lakes earn an Associate of Applied Science degree accumulating college credits, allowing students to choose between continuing college education or immediately starting a career with the knowledge and competitive edge needed to excel in the workforce. Students at Iowa Lakes also benefit from being able to experience college student life, including on-campus housing opportunities, participating in athletics, joining student government, and performing in the fine arts.
“We are pleased to add Cosmetology to the many choices available at Iowa Lakes. Students will be able to graduate in five terms with the advanced skills needed to start a cosmetology career,” explained Tom Brotherton, Executive Dean of the Emmetsburg Campus.
The new state-of-the-art, full-service, on-campus Laker Salon, located on the Emmetsburg Campus, features 12 styling stations, six standard and one ADA compliant shampoo station, a manicure and pedicure room featuring four vented pedicure stations and six vented manicure tables, and a classroom including a counter and full mirror for mannequin work.
“I have wanted to be a Cosmetologist since high school. The new Cosmetology program at Iowa Lakes has provided me that opportunity. Even after 20 years, you can still reach your goals!” shared Jennifer M., a student in the inaugural Cosmetology session.
Through classroom and practical hands-on instruction, students prepare to be licensed cosmetologists and professional hairstylists in the exciting health and beauty industry.
“The world of cosmetology is fun, fast-paced, and ever-changing. I am elated to share my knowledge with the future of my industry and am excited to be welcoming new students!” exclaimed Kendra Webb, Iowa Lakes Cosmetology Instructor.
