Carrington Baker Laker Life Scholarship Becomes Endowed

(Estherville, Iowa) The Carrington Baker Laker Life Scholarship is now an endowed scholarship at Iowa Lakes Community College. This endowment was made possible due to generous gifts from Carrington Baker’s family. The newly endowed scholarship fund allows students who exemplify fellowship and community through the Laker Life Campus Ministry at Iowa Lakes to receive scholarships honoring Bakers’ legacy.

Baker, an Iowa Lakes’ student on the Estherville campus, touched many lives while attending college. He served as a leader within the Laker Life Campus Ministry Lakes and as a youth leader at Grandview Baptist Church.

Baker felt it was incredibly important for all students to feel like they had a safe place to spend time and fellowship with one another. To this end, he opened his dorm as a place for students to come, build community, and spend time together.

Laker Life faculty sponsor Brett Fuelberth shared, “The Carrington Baker Scholarship allows us to share with current students who Cary was, what he believed in, and how we want to perpetuate his legacy of faith with current student leaders in Laker Life. Cary lived out his faith through leading worship and Bible studies, and this scholarship helps current students continue to do the same.”

A scholarship was established in Baker’s name in 2012 following his passing. Over the past eight years, more than eight-thousand dollars have been awarded to sixteen students in Carrington’s honor. Awardees must be members of the Laker Life Campus Ministry at Iowa Lakes Community College, serve as role models and leaders within Laker Life, and attend classes at the Estherville campus.

In August 2020, the scholarship became endowed thanks to Baker’s family’s gifts, Valerie (Baker) Harmon, siblings Chantell Svoboda, Preston Baker, Caleb Baker, and maternal grandparents, Norman and Louise Buseman. Additionally, the endowment will continue to grow thanks to annual gifts from David Baker.
