for Nursing, 2 cr.
This course is designed to provide non-Spanish-speaking
nursing students and practitioners with functional skills in
Spanish. Spanish phrases, commands, and questions practical to
daily nursing duties are covered. No prior knowledge of Spanish
necessary.
PNN-141 Fund of Nursing
Skills Lab, 4 cr.
This course introduces the beginning student to the caring
nature of nursing, the development of the nurse-client
relationship, principles of therapeutic communication and
cultural diversity of clients. Historical, ethical, and legal
principles related to the nursing profession are discussed. The
nursing process is introduced with an emphasis on assessment,
nursing diagnoses and nursing interventions utilizing
standardized nursing language. The steps of the nursing process
are presented as the framework for determining and meeting
client needs within the scope of practice of the practical
nurse. In addition, the student acquires knowledge regarding the
action, effect, side effects and nursing implications of the
major drug classifications and develops safe techniques of drug
administration.
PNN-271 Normal Nutrition,
1 cr.
An exploration of current issues related to nutrition
including the Dietary Guidelines, the Food Pyramid and new
labeling standards. Additional topics include nutrition through
the life cycle, religious and cultural aspects of nutrition, and
weight control and exercise.
PNN-275 Normal Nutrition,
3 cr.
Provides the student with a basic background of the
nutrients essential to maintain the physical and mental
well-being of the human body.
PNN-345 Dimensions in
Practical Nursing, 2 cr.
In this final course of the
Practical Nursing curriculum, the student will explore the role
of the practical nurse as a member of the discipline of nursing,
coordinator of care and provider of care. Corequisite:

PNN-421 Maternal & Newborn
Nursing, 2 cr.
This course is a study of normal pregnancy and childbearing
as it occurs within the family structure. Nursing care during
normal pregnancy, birth and postpartum period are discussed with
an emphasis on the nursing process. Common maternal and newborn
complications are included.
PNN-631 Adult & Child
Health Nursing, 9 cr.
This course emphasizes the role of the practical nurse in
the care of adult and pediatric clients. It includes a study of
the body’s adaptation to the common stressors in health and
illness. Discussion includes medical and nursing management of
specific disorders and conditions requiring surgical
intervention. In addition, common disorders of the child from
infancy through adolescence are discussed with an emphasis on
growth and development.
PNN-632 Nursing
Care-Lifespan Clinical, 3 cr.
This course enables the student to practice the basic
knowledge and skills necessary to meet the nursing care needs of
culturally diverse individuals throughout their lifespan. The
student will care for clients on the obstetrics and the
medical-surgical units. An introduction to the care of the
client in the operating and recovery room will be gained through
an observational experience. Ancillary services such as diet
therapy, respiratory therapy, physical therapy, x-ray and the
laboratory are observed in relation to how they relate to
specific client conditions. In addition, the student will
explore the role of the nurse and utilization of the nursing
process in the long term care setting.
PNN-662
Practical Nursing II, 7cr.
Practical Nursing II continues to examine the concepts of human
needs, the nursing process, and caring. The roles of the
practical nurse as (1) provider of care, (2) coordinator of
care, and (3) member of the discipline of nursing will continue
to be discussed by exploring disease processes and human needs
of the adult and older adult.
PNN-663
Practical Nursing III, 4 cr.
Practical Nursing III completes the practical nursing student’s
exploration of the concepts of human needs, the nursing process,
and caring. The roles of the practical nurse as (1) provider of
care, (2) coordinator of care, and (3) member of the discipline
of nursing will be concluded by exploring the areas of family
nursing and mental health nursing. Concepts of leadership,
management, and professional development will be explored.
Obtaining licensure, continuing education, and finding
employment will be discussed for the practical nursing graduate.
PNN-664
Practical Nursing I, 4 cr.
Practical Nursing I introduces the beginning practical nursing
student to the concepts of human needs, the nursing process, and
caring utilizing theory and lab practice. The roles of the
practical nurse as (1) provider of care, (2) coordinator of
care, and (3) member of the discipline of nursing will be
explored.
PNN-665
Practical Nursing I Clinical, 1 cr.
Practical Nursing I Clinical will allow the beginning practical
nursing student to meet human needs utilizing the nursing
process and displaying caring behaviors. The student will
demonstrate the following roles (1) provider of care, (2)
coordinator of care, and (3) member of the discipline of nursing
while caring for stable, noncomplex clients in a long term care
setting.
PNN-666
Practical Nursing II Clinical, 3 cr.
Practical Nursing II Clinical allows the practical nursing
student to meet human needs utilizing the nursing process and
displaying caring behaviors. The student will demonstrate the
following roles (1) provider of care, (2) coordinator of care,
and (3) member of the discipline of nursing while caring for
stable, noncomplex clients in an acute care setting.
PNN-667
Practical Nursing III Preceptorship, 2 cr.
Practical Nursing III Preceptorship is designed to assist the
student in transitioning into the role of an entry level
practical nurse. Students will work with a preceptor to plan,
implement, and evaluate care to assigned patients in a long term
care setting. The student will demonstrate positive
communication skills and begin to work as an effective member of
the discipline of nursing.
PNN-722 Fund of Nursing
Clinical, 2 cr.
Provides the student the opportunity to demonstrate
principles and skills learned in the classroom and lab setting.
The student develops an awareness of the role of the nurse in
caring for stable, noncomplex clients in acute care facilities.
Communication skills, documentation and utilization of the
nursing process/standardized language are integral parts of the
clinical component.

This course is designed to assist the student in
