#1 TEAM MAKES ‘GIVING TO OTHERS’ #1 FOR A DAY
The #1 team in NJCAA Division II Basketball made
others more important than themselves during
community service work in Estherville recently.
The Iowa Lakes Men’s Basketball team, along with
Head Men’s Basketball Coach Troy Larson,
Assistant Coach Ben Rops and Graduate Assistant
Jason McKinney, worked with Jason Olson, Pastor
of Crossroads Community Church to identify
elderly individuals in Estherville who needed
help with raking leaves.
The men took action and soon had helped clean
several yards in town.
“Iowa Lakes and our student athletes enjoy
giving back to Estherville,” Head Coach Larson
said. “This is our home and we want to be
active in the community. By helping out we can
make Estherville a better place.”
This event follows the annual Drug Awareness
Basketball Clinic Oct. 24 where youth in
kindergarten through 8th grade were
instructed by members of the team on basketball
fundamentals. There was also a strong “just say
no to drugs” message throughout that clinic.
Other community service work which is planned
for athletes includes: A baseball clinic this
fall which will include a food drive; reading in
the elementary schools; and having at least one
athlete from each sport who will become a mentor
for the Kinship organization.
