Students from three area high schools competed in the Area III Academic Decathlon Thursday evening and Friday (Jan. 24-25) at the Emmetsburg Campus of Iowa Lakes Community College.
The South Central Calhoun Team won the competition; with the Algona Team taking second; and the Spirit Lake Team placing third.
In addition, the top overall score went to Zack Stewart of South Central Calhoun with 5,655 points.
A total of three teams competed along with 14 alternate students.
Individuals participated in speech, interview, music, art, social science, math, economics and language arts. Thursday evening, the students participated in team competition of a “Super Quiz Relay.”
The statewide scores have been tallied and all teams competing ranked in the top 24 and will advance to the state competition in Mt. Vernon.

The top team was from South Central Calhoun. They included: Front Row L-R: Morgan Snyder, Jace Neubaum, Joel Wernimont, Brad Richardson; Middle Row L-R: Matthew Nieland (holding manatee), Brittany King, Zachary Stewart, Santana Hernandez-Bergerson, Coach John Olson; and, Back Row L-R: Brighton Mims, Nicholas Collison, Blake Fonken and Kirby Olson.

Students involved in the Academic Decathlon participated in a “Super Quiz” as the Thursday evening portion of the competition wrapped up.
