Iowa Lakes wrestlers Victor DeJesus, Dan McGillivray and Matt Wyss are still in the winners’ bracket after day one of the National Wrestling Tournament in Spokane, Wash. And, the Iowa Lakes team is in 10th place as of the end of wrestling action Friday evening.
Top ranked DeJesus had a first round bye and then won by default in his second round match advancing on to the quarterfinals of the winners’ bracket today. The Lakers #4 ranked 165-pound McGillivray is also on to the quarterfinals with a bye and then a second round fall victory. Heavyweight Matt Wyss has had two impressive pins which advances him to the quarterfinals of the winners’ bracket.
The Lakers still have three wrestlers in the consolation bracket with 157-pound Brock Storm, 184-pound Blaine Conner and 197-pound Jim Doyle. All have the opportunity to place as high as third.
Andrew Brackins at 125-pound and 133-pound Cody Singletary lost tough matches in both of the first matches.
The matches continue today (Saturday) with championship finals at 6 p.m. in Spokane, Wash.
