The Jens and Helen Kirkegaard Memorial Scholarship was established in 2005. Award amounts vary, and have been as much as $6,500. Students can use the scholarship for tuition, books or fees. Jens, a Danish immigrant, and Helen, a Canada native, adopted Graettinger as their hometown where they were active community members and strong supporters of education. Requirements are: students 25 years of age or order, full-time enrollment in the nursing program, permanent resident of Palo Alto, Emmet, Clay, Kossuth or Dickinson counties in Iowa and financial need as determined by FAFSA results.
The 2012-13 recipients are Staci Henderson of Wallingford, and Stephanie Zahrt of Spencer.
