Veterinary Technician

The Veterinary Technician program at Iowa Lakes started in the fall of 2011.
Students in the program will take both a small animal and a large animal clinic observation class in their first year. In addition, some of the other courses include Vet Tech Animal Anatomy and Physiology courses, Pathology, Veterinary Law and Ethics and Office Procedures.
Students will have a lot of hands-on classes.
College officials are currently working to re-design space for the students – and their lab courses – which include the care of small animals.
The program will prepare students for employment at veterinary practices.
Veterinary Technicians are valued employees in veterinary clinics and work under the direction and supervision of veterinarians. Technicians provide assistance to Doctors of Veterinary Medicine and work as vet nurses, radiography technicians, surgical nurses/anesthetists and lab technicians within set regulations.
In addition, Vet Techs also work with clients, enabling the owners to better understand the specific treatment and steps being taken to improve the health of their animals.
